Biography

Dr. Ashraf studied medicine at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and awarded Lyons Memorial Medal & McDonnell’s Prize for surgery. He completed his basic surgical training in Dublin before moving to the UK to join the higher surgical training scheme. He was appointed a minimal access upper GI consultant surgeon to Dorset County Hospital before moving to his current position of a Lead Laparoscopic / Oesophago-Gastric Consultant Surgeon to Aneurin Bevan University Health Board. He holds the fellowships of the Dublin and London Royal Colleges as well as American College of Surgeons. Ashraf is an expert in the field of upper GI surgery and holds a distinguished personal chair of surgery from University of South Wales. He is a member of council of the association of the upper GI surgeons of Great Britain & Ireland (AUGIS) and an executive member of Wales Association of Gastroenterology & Endoscopy (WAGE). Ashraf’s main clinical and academic interests revolve around early detection of oesophageal cancer, improving outcome of minimal access oesophageal procedures, standardization of training in minimal access surgery and human reliability analysis to evaluate the quality of laparoscopic antireflux surgery. He runs over 10 research projects encompassing a wide spectrum of technology & basic science research including Barrett’s oesophagus, severe acute pancreatitis, surgical safety & utilization of augmented reality to improve minimal access surgical outcome. Ashraf was tasked by the royal college to design the dash board for surgical outcome indicators for anti-reflux procedures. He has also delivered many prestigious and named lectures both nationally & internationally on Oesophago-Gastric Diseases. He is a visiting professor at several institutions worldwide.

Research Interest

His research interest include management of Barrett’s esophagus, acute severe pancreatitis, laparoscopic surgery for GIST, prevention of injury and standardization of training in laparoscopic biliary and anti-reflux surgery.
