These play a major role exploration & furtherance of therapies for medical care. There are 4-Phases in clinical trials. The final phase includes a documentation process which is called as a CASE REPORT. A case report is a detailed report of signs, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment & adverse/side effects (if any) in the form of a document. Several medical institutes are involved in various research activities. Clinical background includes registered Doctors, Surgeons, Scientists, Physicians, Nurses & Clinical specialists.

Dubai's Population-The official scenario, as per The Executive Council (TEC) projects a 5.3% increase in population until 2015 and a 7.4% increase between 2015 to 2020. The 7.4% increase has been assumed to continue until 2025.

Insurance, Regulations, Reimbursement, and Competitiveness - The U.A.E. spends approximately $1,200 per person each year in healthcare, ranking it among the top 20 countries in the world for healthcare spending per capita. In order to sustain all of its healthcare costs, the country has been moving toward a universal healthcare system. A law passed in 2005 required all expatriates and their families living in Abu Dhabi to have private medical coverage, and a law passed in 2007 gave HAAD the mandate to develop insurance policy and provide health insurance regulation services. In 2010, a requirement in Abu Dhabi was enacted for all hospitals and insurers to bill on a diagnosis rate group (DRG) system. This requirement, plus other measures such as standardized contracts, is expected to slow the rising cost of medical services. Today, universal healthcare insurance is in place in Abu Dhabi and Dubai but only actively enforced in Abu Dhabi. Dubai is in the process of rolling out its universal healthcare insurance system and recently mandated that the population of the entire emirate must be covered by 2016. Sharjah is expected to implement a health authority and policies similar to HAAD and DHA in the near future.

Challenges and Areas of Improvement

Dubai has a highly evolved health services, including a sophisticated physical infrastructure of well-equipped hospitals, specialized clinics and primary care centers. The population in Dubai will increase to 3.5 million by 2020. Dubai and the Northern Emirates are similarly focused on developing healthy pharmaceutical industries in the U.A.E. Pharmaceuticals and their subsequent pricing in the region stands out as a key area of focus. The Abu Dhabi 2030 plan specifically states that “the Emirate has still to develop capabilities in key areas; specifically by enhancing intellectual property rights, revising international trade agreements, establishing a reliable drug testing and approval system, developing investment attraction mechanisms and marketing and distribution capabilities, the growth of a dynamic pharmaceuticals segment will go hand-in-hand with the development of a world-class healthcare system, with the development of each sector reinforcing the other”. The number of health facilities in Dubai is around 2,518 and more than 70% of the hospitals are internationally accredited. Health professionals here speak more than 40 languages.

Demand for hospital beds is expected to increase to 70,000 in Saudi by 2016-

In order to manage this increase, the government has been implementing policies to increase private sector participation, resulting in significant private sector growth, accounting for over 50% of the newly established hospitals and incremental bed capacity.

Current Health Issues in Middle East-

  • MERS was first identified in humans in Saudi Arabia in 2012 and the majority of cases have been in the Middle East. Scientists are not sure of the origin of the virus, but several studies have linked it to camels.
  • The most common infectious disease in Dubai is Chickenpox.
  • The top three causes of ill health in the UAE are depression, anxiety and lower back pain. This is a reflection that mental health is a very important part of health & wellbeing in UAE.
  • The causes of premature death in UAE are slightly different; road injury is now the top cause. This is because road injury often causes death in younger people.  The rate of deaths and injuries in road accidents across the UAE declined in the first quarter of 2015, compared with the same period last year.
  • Sandstorms blanketed the UAE have been blamed for a rise in the number of patients admitted to hospitals.
  • The most frequent urological disorders in the UAE are stone diseases, urinary tract infections (UTIs) as well as chronic inflammation of the prostate. There are also significant numbers of urinary incontinence in females and Andrology disturbances in males.
  • Children in UAE are more prone to asthma & allergies. Asthma is an increasingly common condition in the UAE, often associated with allergy.
  • Around 10% of babies are born prematurely and whilst survival rates are good for the late preterm babies, the more premature the baby the lower the chances of survival.
  • Food and other allergies are common amongst babies and children and can be serious; 90% of food allergies are caused by peanuts which can cause a serious, immediate allergic reaction.
